For many, it calls to mind the image of a
strong male role model - the person who helped shape your character and
instill important values. For others, it conjures up a host of other
images and feelings, such as neglect, abuse, or even abandonment. There
are may faces of fatherhood, including biological father, stepfathers,
grandfathers, and a host of understudies - from uncles, brothers,
teachers, and coaches to religious leaders - who fill the void when they
are needed. But no matter who fills
the crucial role, each can supply the love and attention that a child
needs.
Yet, fatherlessness in America has
reached almost epidemic proportions - about four out of ten children now
live in a separate households from their fathers. We can no longer
afford to allow these missing faces of fatherhood to be someone
else's problem. Each of us can be part of the solution. You need
not be a dad, or even a male, to make a difference.
You can get involved in a variety of
ways. Enclosed within the resource guide included within the
calendar is partial list of organizations that offer opportunities for
membership and support. You can also make a difference through
your own acts of kindness, by using resources, time, and energy, to help
a child in need.
