Family and Work

Does the phrase "working father" sound like and oxymoron or is it just a new realization that working fathers face similar but different challenges than fathers of a generation(s) ago?  One reason many men do not spend more time with their children is they need to work.   Clashes between family and work create an increasing amount of stress.  Here are some ideas to put family and work into perspective:
Take your child to work with you.

Create a dads group at work and get together informally for coffee or lunch as dads and after work with your children.

Look into flexible scheduling, aka flex-time.

Get your boss or the CEO of the business to endorse a father-friendly workplace.

Insist on rewards based on performance not "face time."

Take paternity leave when a child is born or when you have an adoption.

Create daily rituals for staying connected with your spouse and children.

Be spontaneous, call home during the day.

Reconnect when you get home from work by getting involved at you child's level.

Send a fax, e-mail, post card, letter or special greeting to your family when you're out of town.

Create a travel quiz of important learning opportunities tied to the destination of an out-of-town trip.

Do not allow the telephone or a beeper to interrupt family time.  Call back or respond on your schedule.
